The Bucket List
Last year in September I was writing about our trip to play golf at Sugarloaf. It was a long day, and we still talk about how fast and unplayable the greens were. The course is cut out through the Maine woods, and the views are breathtaking. I still feel that it is one of the best designed courses in the state. If you haven’t got a chance to play it, it is worth the trip.
Yesterday I had the pleasure of playing The Samoset Resort Country Club. I have been to the Resort many times but have never played the golf course. It was definitely one of those “Bucket List” days. The course was in amazing condition. There was green grass everywhere. The views of the ocean and rocky coast are unparalleled for any course I have played. If I had to find any fault in the course (and I will) it is the design and layout. I’m not saying I could do better but at times it felt like a $200 round at Paris Hill CC. I realize there is only so much land to work with but a shared green and another shared tee box makes it seems like you’re a sardine in a can. I have never heard the word “Four” so much in one day.
It has certainly been a wonderful year at LKCC. I can remember it raining every Saturday for 4 months, but I assured our management that “People will come. They most definitely will come!” I wouldn’t trade our Donald Ross/Paul Lusky gem for anything in the world. We continue to try and make improvements every year while maintaining the design and integrity of our beautiful course. I know that I have a biased opinion, but I rejoice whenever I feel like I can compare our course to any other course in the State. I feel that way now!
I realize that golf is a spectator sport, and it helps that it is televised every weekend. There are thousands of fans that watch golf regularly. You probably haven’t had a chance to watch the FA Raiders golf team this year or even read about their match results. The team is getting better every year and the numbers going out for the team have doubled in the last 10 years. The Raiders took on defending State Champ Freeport High School last week and came out victorious. Freeport was favored to win the States again by many columnists. The Raiders shot a total score of 151. For all you accountants that’s a 36, 38, 38, 39 and their #1 golfer was not in the mix. Surprise, I’m on the Raiders band wagon again. Super fun to watch these junior golfers progress!
I have written about the GOAT in the past. Maybe next month I should expand the horizons and include greatest golf courses in Maine. I have not played them all (yet) but Belgrade Lakes and Boothbay CC would have to be near the top of my list. I know what you’re thinking. Where does LKCC come in on my list? All I will say is that I got a notification from an independent golf publication (Golfgraphs) two months ago. They rated the Best Courses in every State. They had 2 categories: Top 3 courses in Maine, price is no factor. Belgrade, Sunday River, Sugarloaf. Top 3 courses in Maine under $100 greens fees. Sunday River, Sugarloaf and Lake Kezar Country Club. As Forrest Gump would say, “That’s all I’m going to say about that.”
Please enjoy the rest of the golfing season. Our conditions are amazing, and we still have some great weather ahead. As you all know, “the key to happiness is always having something to look forward to!” If you have a chance, cross something off your bucket list for me.
