“Where would we be?”
As I read back through my last 6 years of July blogs, I realized that July not only is a very busy month, but my blogs are often tardy. I know it is almost two thirds of the way through July but better late than never…
Our Junior golf clinic ended last week, and we had over 60 kids attend. The kids and the parents are so appreciative of the effort that all the instructors show to the beginning players. The summer is very short, and I sure do respect each instructor for their time and patience. The daily ice cream and cold water are a big hit also. These children are the future of our sport and our course. A special thanks to the Men’s Twilight League and Tuesday morning Social League for their financial support of this program.
We are getting very close to the completion of our Driving Range. We have grass, a building, an automated ball dispenser, a ball washer, a ball picker, irrigation under route 5, a parking lot and a raised tee box which is ready for Main Turf Co. sod. Maybe we will see them this week. Stay tuned for updates as we will be boasting about having the only all real grass range within an hour of LKCC. Hit‘em straight or not.
I was conversing with one of my former teachers today. His family was a great influence in the building of our course, and his father was certainly one of my mentors growing up. I obviously have great respect for all they have done for our course, the community and Fryeburg Academy. He mentioned that in the last 3-4 years the conditions of the course have improved significantly every year. I agreed with him and felt pleased that he took the time to tell me. There is no doubt now that many of the players that come here for the first time return not only for the great customer service but for the wonderful playing conditions that we enjoy. A heartfelt thank you goes out to our leadership team and all our employees that make LKCC such a special place.
I was “taking in” one of my favorite movies several days ago. It is titled “Draft Day”. It is about the NFL draft and the Cleveland Browns. Kevin Costner plays the Browns GM, Sonny Weaver. I’ve always wanted to be Kevin Costner, but this is as close as I’m going to get. The ESPN announcer proclaim that Sonny had 1 pick, sprinkled it with “Fairy Dust” and turned it into 3 potentially impactful players. The owner of the Browns, Anthony Molina (played by Frank Langella) is getting congratulated for such a great Draft Day by Bernie Kosar. He looks at the Bernie and proclaims “I can’t take all the credit… but I will!” Sonny looks at him and just smiles. I certainly will not be taking all the credit for our fortune.
We had our LKCC stockholders meeting this morning. I think it went very well. The course is growing steadily every year, and we are constantly planning our next improvement or renovation. Getting the driving range open will be a big relief for me. It has been a lot of work and planning. As I left the meeting, I could not help but notice people parking their cars on the grass by the historical society. This is our “overflow” parking when the pavement is full. All I could think about was “where would we be” if this place was still a nine-hole course? I can assure you we would have a lot of unhappy patrons. Thank God for our back nine, the vision of our predecessors and the talent and work ethic of Paul Lusky. We will forever be indebted. See you in the fairway. God Bless!
