“Desire”
As I have done in the past, I waited until after our Member/Member Tournament to scratch out the August Blog. The second Sunday in August is always one of my favorite days of the year. We hosted over 80 members last Sunday and had a wonderful day. The course was amazing, the weather was sunny and the food was second to none. We are so lucky to have such a great member and chef to host this event every year. Many thanks Tom!
We gave out lots of prizes and awards but for the second year in a row, no one won the free membership. The ticket raffle is always a highlight of the luncheon. Kyle L got all the way to the end but lost to the club in a final draw. So much laughter and fun. Thank you to all who attended.
Last year I wrote about the “power of teamwork”. How so many people work together at LKCC to make it what it has become today, a golfing destination. I’ve had a lot of time to think about this process in the last 12 months. I have not mowed the fairways as often as I did last year. We have 3 awesome craftsmen that do that now. I have become a sub whenever needed. One of the greatest things about mowing grass on a riding mower is how many of the world’s problems you can solve in your mind as you mow. There is a lot of time to think once you have the routine down.
One of my new “part-time jobs” is to sprinkler “magic dust” on any small holes on or around the greens. It is like a breakfast buffet for our small crawling rodents. I think it is like a brain food that makes them smarter and teaches them not to make little sand piles on our greens…. In any case, this is another job that is easily perfected and allows lots of time to think about the course and the people. Lately, most of my thoughts have been focused on “how incredible it is to have so many hard working people that are all working together for the same goal.” I have been very fortunate to run several businesses over the last 45 years. My desire for the businesses was always the same. “How can I make the lives better of all my employees? It was never about the money. Just ask me and I will give you several names of customers that still have a bunch of my money in their bank accounts. They’ll get their day.
So, as I walk around 19 greens and sprinkle my buffet breakfast magic dust, I ask myself the same question over and over. “Why do all the people work so hard, day after day, to make LKCC so spectacular?” It is certainly not because they are getting rich. The only answer I could come up with was “desire” (a deep urge, wish or passion for a certain outcome). The customer service, the friendly voice, the delicious sandwiches, the quality of grass cut, the manicured sand traps, the clean bathrooms, the free drink of water, the repaired ball marks and the regrowth of grass on our tees and greens. This is not an accident. It is pure desire. It has made so many dreams come true. As Bonnie Raitt sings in one of my favorite songs (Angel from Montgomery) “If dreams were thunder and lightning was desire, this old (club)house would have burnt down a long time ago.” My deepest respect to our team/family.
I was blessed to play golf on Sunday in the same group as my son. He played with his close friend as I did. I marveled as I watched those young men launch the ball off the tee. They hit it so far it was amazing. I know what you’re thinking, I’m going to say, “I can remember when I could hit it that far!” Wrong again. I never remember being able to hit it that far and nobody that I ever played with could either. If they decide to work on their chipping and putting, they will have many years of success. It was a day I will not soon forget.
