Stay out of the sand….
I have started the ritual of reading my past blogs from the previous year before I write a new one. As I was searching for my August 2023 blog I realized that I missed last years’ blog for this month and had to write an apology blog in September of last year. Two years ago I wrote about Dr. Fauci and that didn’t go well. Don’t worry Nance, no politics or State bashing here.
As we cling to the last month of summer, you always hear the same thing. “Where did the summer go?” I would like to refute this lame statement but I feel the same way. It seems like from Memorial day to Labor day is just a blink of an eye.
The Men’s Twilight League ended their season Tuesday evening with their annual fun night and banquet. It was the best year in memory. We only missed one night due to weather and our league was completely full all season. The enacting of the “sub” strategy has improved Tuesday nights at our course. Thank you to Josh for navigating the logistic of the league with pure brilliance. Handicapping 48 “Professional golfers” is never easy.
The Scotch Foursomes ended their season on Wednesday evening. I have always wanted to play with that group. It seems like such a terrific group of people. Maybe next year. I don’t have any results but Marc and Nancy had guaranteed victory earlier in the week. The anticipation is killing me….
It is no secret that I enjoy playing golf early in the morning. The cooler temps, occasional wildlife, the breathtaking sunrises and the speed of play are all benefits of being an “early riser.” Our staff works very hard to accommodate every golfer’s needs. We want everyone to feel like they are part of the family and that we want them out on our course. There is one request that I would like to share with everyone. Please remember that the maintenance staff has the “right of way” on the course. We recently had an instance where an employee was top dressing a green at 6:30 am and a golf ball hit the green just in front of his machine. He reacted automatically by hitting the brakes. Hence the two short skid markers in the second green. We will patch those today but please wait for the crew to clear any area before you hit your ball.
I was having a conversation with a wonderful member and friend recently. We got onto the topic of technology. We instantly agreed that our children were more tech savvy than their parents. All the information in the world it at our finger tips and is basically instantaneous. Phones, iPad, Apple watches and computers are used every minute to get any information that you desire. I am as guilty as the next guy. Any time I want to cook a piece of meat on the smoker (or fish Patty), I google “the best recipe for…” and off I go. I think that most young people would either laugh or be completely confused if they were asked to go research a topic using my dusty set of Encyclopedia Britannica’s. Isn’t technology great?
Well, I’ve almost got through this blog and have managed to restrain myself in an election year. I know someone that is nervous now. I will end with a quote from my favorite movie, The American President. As Michael J Fox is arguing with the President Shepard (Michael Douglas) he states that “In the absence of leadership people will crawl through the desert to a mirage and when they discover there’s no water, they will drink the sand. “President Shepard responds, “They don’t drink the sand because they are thirsty. They drink the sand because they don’t know the difference.” It has always seemed like a classic line to me….
Please come and enjoy some great golf and fellowship whenever you have a chance. We have wonderful people; terrific food and we don’t put sand in our drinks.
